Today I was shown how to make interesting characters related to Beano which was shown to us by the Directors of Mischief and Mayhem.
They are actual people who are mad men! Their names are Mike and Craig who were very nice and ridiculously funny people. Just like my friend’s dad.

Mike and Craig are editors of The Beano. It is their job to come up with the stories. They told us that they make the stories up by dreaming the ideas, then writing them down and exaggerate things to make it funnier.
They then send the ideas to an artist who will make them into a cartoon and then they will add dialogue onto the pictures. Then the editor comes along and says hello and checks it all.
It is then printed and once it has been printed it is split into lorries and vans and taken to shops. I can then go in and buy it for £3.25.

On the webinar they asked for ideas for a new character. It started with a drawing of a blank book and then he put lots of kids ideas on the page and it all merged together to make a new character.
On the Beano character it had a drone and dimples that I suggested in the chat box. I was very happy to be chosen.

This is my character, that I created after the webcast. This is Rancid Rod who is a stink bomb and official mad man. He has Minnie T Minx about to pick him up and throw it into Miss Mystery’s office.
I also learned how they came up with characters for The Beano and Boomix, which is a mixture between a book and a comic.
I had another question answered. I asked them if they had ever been to Tam Shepherd’s Trick Shop in Queen Street in Glasgow. Craig gasped and asked “is that still open?”

He said that he was speaking to Mike about it and that he LOVED it! I was so happy that he answered my question.
My other question that he answered was if he had been pranked.
He had… by himself! Craig took a stink bomb into another magazine office and set it off, it inflated and went boom. And then everyone had to be evacuated from the building because the smell was so bad. Everyone guessed that it was Craig and I think he would have got into a lot of trouble!!!!!!
He wanted to give away a stink bomb every week in The Beano but he decided it was too dangerous after his prank.

  1. Hi Rowan!

Just found this epic blog and wanted to say how brilliant it is (not just the Beano bits). Well done, and hopefully we can do another webchat this year!

  2. Thank you I will do the course again. At Christmas my friend Jude gave me his entire stash of Beanos, Beezers, Busters and Dandys. Jude is 22 now. He gave them to me because I would look after them. Some of them cost 14p and are from 50 years ago. Please let off a stink bomb in the lobby for me. Rowan
